COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A grand jury has indicted the man accused of leading authorities on a high-speed chase that ended in an officer-involved shooting.
In late March, investigators said George Reynolds Evans tried to kill his estranged wife in the parking lot of an Olive Garden in Jacksonville. The next day, Evans led authorities including Columbus County deputies and troopers with the Highway Patrol on a chase that ended on US Highway 74/76. When Evans got out of his vehicle, investigators said he pointed a gun at authorities. Officers shot Evans during that incident; the SBI has since cleared those officers involved.
This week, a grand jury indicted Evans on the charges related to the chase; Evans was already indicted on the attempted murder charge.
Evans is currently in jail awaiting trial for the attempted murder charge.
