WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- Calvin Norton is running to be the next sheriff of Columbus County and he's trying to get some traction for his campaign this weekend.
Today he sent out an email challenging current Sheriff Lewis Hatcher to a debate on Saturday.
Norton, who's African-American and also claims to be a Son of the Confederacy, says he wants to focus on the problems in Columbus County including why officers are employed with the sheriff’s office whom have been fired, discipline, misconduct, or has committed perjury under oath.
He says he also plans to give at least a one-hour speech on his plans to stop corruption, offer youth a future other than our jails or prison, solve murders, cease gang activities, surveillance scrap yards, pawn shops, doctors, and pharmacy records to assure an arrest on all criminals dealing in drugs or property theft.
The forum will be at 2:00 p.m. off Highway 701 North about (600 feet from) Hwy. 74-76 in Whiteville. Norton says there will be a free pig picking, fish fry, Japanese rice and more.
No word yet on if Sheriff Hatcher will attend.
