JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- A judge has increased the bond for a man accused of shooting his estranged wife outside a Jacksonville restaurant earlier this year and then leading officers on a high-speed chase in Columbus County.
Bond for George Reynolds Evans is now set at $2.5 million.
A grand jury indicted Evans this week on charges of attempted first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and two misdemeanor counts of violation of a domestic violence protective order. He pleaded not guilty to those charges today.
Evans is accused of shooting Audry Evans March 29 outside Olive Garden on Western Blvd., where family members say she worked.
The next day, law enforcement says Evans led them on a high-speed chase in Columbus County. Troopers say Evans eventually got out of his car with a weapon. That's when officers opened fire.
Columbus County District Attorney Jon David says he is still waiting for the SBI to finish its report on the officer-involved shooting. He says he expects that in the next couple of weeks. David also says Evans will face charges for the chase in Columbus County. He says investigators are still working on what those charges will be.
