LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY)-- Fifteen cardboard boats competed at the Lake Waccamaw Sailing Club for the state championship title in a 200 yard race Saturday afternoon.
The event organizer from the Whiteville Rotary Club, Jonathan Medford, says,“We had teams enter from all over the state of North Carolina."
"We hope that this event continues to grow into a North Carolina Father’s Day weekend tradition,”Medford says.
The challenge of the race is to design and build a human-powered cardboard boat that can complete the course.
This year's boats featured a Giant Squid, Pirate Ship with a Sea Creature attached, Container Ship, Origami boat, and many different variations of craft.
Awards were given for Most Original Design, Best Construction, Team Spirit, Shortest Boat, Longest Boat, People’s Choice, and the “Titanic Award for the Most Spectacular Sinking”.
All proceeds for the event go to the Whiteville Rotary Club's Good Works Fund, which supports many local charities, non-profits, and scholarships throughout Columbus County.
