LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) -- Lake Waccamaw leaders are awaiting water test results after they say thousands of gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into Lake Waccamaw when it rained following two sanitary sewer spills.
According to a news release from the town, the first spill happened Wednesday at a manhole on Canal Cove Road, and town leaders say the second happened at another manhole on Creek Ridge Road. The two spills ultimately resulted in about 7,500 gallons of untreated wastewater to overflow into the lake.
Persistent inflow and infiltration of groundwater into the town's sewer collection system is what caused the spill, town leaders said in the release. Heavy rainfall there Wednesday then caused the waste overflowed into Lake Waccamaw.
The release says the NC Department of Environmental and Natural Resources requires the town to take two sets of samples for testing. Town leaders say the first set of test results will be available today, while the second set will be completed by Tuesday.
